Vital Statistics

Mileages

Approximately 5 miles each way.

Elevations

5440’ to 2885’

Trailhead Access

From Cedar Ridge on Highway 89 head west on the dirt road just south of the gas station (road #6110). Go straight (right) where this dirt road splits after about 6.5 miles. There are many side roads but the main road stays south of Shinumo Altar and workds its way down through the Eminence Break. When the road splits again stay to the left branch which continues in the same general direction. As the road goes along the south side of Shinumo Wash there is a shallow wash that enters it. Park here.

The Shinumo access was at one time a constructed trail. There is still evidence of this trail but it takes some care to follow. Even so it is worth the effort in the upper portions of the trail. From the parking spot, drop into the shallow drainage that obviously leads into the canyon. After several hundred yards this drainage ends at a large cliff of Kaibab Limestone and the route ahead appears impassable. Scramble over some boulders to the left and find the start of a trail which follows a ledge along the cliff face. This is an indistinct trail that switchbacks its way through the cliffs onto the talus slope below. From here it aims down canyon till it reaches the top of the Coconino formation. The trail switchbacks again through here and then continues down to the drainage bottom. There are no difficulties from here to the pouroff above the river. This pouroff prohibits access to the river but there is a trail on the left just before here which heads down river for a mile. This eventually crosses the next minor drainage downriver and then down a slope to a beach.

Water Sources

Colorado River and possibly potholes just above river in the redwall. At lower water there is also a spring at river level at the beach.

Campsites

Good camping at the access to the Colorado River and may flat spots in the drainage.
