New Hance Loop

This advanced trek is one of the Grand Canyon South Rim’s most challenging hikes. A steep descent down a trail rich with history will evoke your appreciation for Grand Canyon pioneers like John Hance. Following Red Canyon, all but the most expereinced Canyon Hikers will be suprised by the difficulty of this awesome hike.  The end of this rugged trail brings you to Hance Rapids, one of the Canyon’s most difficult, and an amazing opportunity to see the power of the hand that carved this Grand Canyon. This will be home for the evening, and a great place to relish at your accomplishment as you enjoy a riverside dinner.

After a night on the beach, you’ll leave the mighty Colorado River and head to Hance Creek. Perched below the redwall cliffs of Horseshoe Mesa, this quiet perennial stream flows under ancient Cottonwoods, making a peaceful retreat for the evening. Once camp is set up, you'll have time to explore this beautiful canyon.  On day three you'll pass Page Springs and a abandoned Copper Mine en route to Horseshoe Mesa, where you can explore the Cave of the Domes.  This hidden cave is a trip highlight and a welcome break before the steep ascent back up the Grandview Trail back to the Rim, and the end of your Canyon backpacking adventure.
