Monument Valley Tours

Part of the Colorado Plateau, Monument Valley is home to iconic images of the American west made famous through film and television. Not actually a valley but rather a wide, flat, and at times desolate landscape, Monument Valley is characterized by its interestingly shaped butte formations which rise hundreds of feet into the air. The floor is largely Cutler Red siltstone or its sand deposited by the rivers that formed the valley. Exposed iron oxide is responsible for its brilliant red color, while the darker, blue-gray color of other rocks comes from manganese oxide.

What’s There To Do?

The Navajo Nation provides a visitor center. During the summer months a souvenir shop and Haskenneini Restaurant, which specializes in both native Navajo and American cuisines, are open to the public There are year-round restroom facilities. One mile before the center, numerous Navajo vendors sell arts, crafts, native food and souvenirs at roadside stands.

Guided tours of the park and Mystery Valley (a part of Monument Valley where visitors cannot go without a guide) are available. The fee for tours varies between about $40 and $100 per person depending on the services provided and route.

Visitors can also pay a fee to access Valley Drive, a 17-mile dirt road which starts at the center and goes south east amongst the towering cliffs and mesas. There are also many ancient cave and cliff dwellings, natural arches and petroglyphs.
