Horseshoe Mesa

Awesome panoramas, hidden caves and pristine streams are all part of the experience of the Horseshoe Mesa area. The gateway to Horseshoe Mesa is the aptly named Grandview Trail. This short but rugged route was developed for the Last Chance Mine when copper was discoverd here in 1890. Used as a route since the time of ancestral puebloans, the Grandview Trail will lead you to your base camp on Horseshoe Mesa.  Once here opportunity abounds: Hance Creek, Cottonwood Creek, off-trail routes to the river, Cave of the Domes and abandoned mines are all at your fingertips. Whether you're looking for a short one night adventure or a four day trek, this Grand Canyon backpacking adventure is a great trip you'll be sure to remember.

The Grandview Trail drops nearly 3,000 feet in its three mile decent to Horseshoe Mesa.  This rugged hike is more of a wilderness experience than the more popular hikes, and a great way for more experienced hikers to explore the Canyon.  During the trip you can set up camp on Horseshoe Mesa, Hance Creek or Cottonwood Creek.  From these basecamps you will be able to lead you to many amazing destinations throughout your stay, including a little used route to the Colorado River.  For those who want to make this trip even more adventurous you can spend a day in Grapevine Canyon.  This little visited drainage is one of the South Rims most amazing side canyons and a true adventure off the beaten path.  The last day of your trip to this area will challenge even the fittest hiker as you make the steep ascent back up the Grandview Trail, and reminisce on this awesome eperience.
